Petersham Nurseries Wedding Photography: An Alternative Richmond Wedding Venue

Petersham Nurseries in Richmond has been one of my favourite London venues for many years. I haven’t photographed a wedding there yet, but I’ve visited and photographed this extraordinary place many times, and it remains firmly on my wedding photography wish list.
So this isn’t a story about a wedding I’ve already photographed. It’s my personal perspective on a place I genuinely love, why I think it makes such an amazing venue for a wedding, and what I would bring to photographing a celebration here.
My relationship with Petersham Nurseries started many years ago, long before I was thinking about writing this guide.
Why I Fell in Love With Petersham Nurseries Richmond
The first time I visited Petersham Nurseries was nearly twenty years ago, with an architect friend I had met while studying interior design near Wimbledon.
She knew about my love of gardens, design, independent family businesses and places with a slightly quirky creative spirit. She told me I needed to visit Petersham Nurseries in Richmond.
She was absolutely right.
I had never seen anything quite like it.
What I thought would be a visit to a nursery became a wonderful sensory journey through plants, art, food, travel, colour and design. Beautiful objects from different cultures sat alongside English plants, old greenhouses, terracotta, flowers and extraordinary pieces that made me want to stop and examine everything.
I was mesmerised.
I bought the Petersham Nurseries book because I wanted to understand the story behind the place. When I discovered more about the Boglione family, their Italian heritage and Francesco’s travels through India, something clicked for me.
I’m Italian too. After university, I spent a lot of time travelling, particularly through Brazil and South America. Perhaps that’s partly why the international spirit of Petersham Nurseries spoke to me so strongly.
It felt less like visiting a nursery and more like discovering another world.
And I’ve kept going back.
The Beautiful Imperfection of Petersham Nurseries
As a photographer, this is where Petersham Nurseries becomes fascinating.
The old greenhouses stand proudly with their iron framework, peeling paint and beautiful signs of time. Underfoot there is compacted earth full of texture rather than shiny, sterile perfection.
Plants overlap objects. Flowers interrupt architecture. Old terracotta sits alongside elegant tables and extraordinary artefacts.
There is an apparent eccentricity to everything, yet somehow it all belongs.
When I walk through Petersham Nurseries with my camera, I have to remind myself:
Stop. Breathe. Look.
There is so much to discover, and the experience changes with every season.
That visual richness is exactly what attracts me as a photographer.
Photographing the Light Inside the Greenhouses
The light is another reason I keep photographing Petersham Nurseries.
On a grey winter day, the old greenhouse glass creates beautiful soft, diffused light.
In summer, sunlight moves through glass, leaves and flowers, creating reflections, layers and unexpected pockets of colour.
I love working with those changes rather than fighting them.
I can imagine an elegant hand holding a champagne glass against rough terracotta. A face appearing briefly between layers of foliage. Candlelight reflected in old glass. Guests talking around a long table surrounded by plants.
Those little visual contradictions are what interest me.
My wedding photography is documentary and relaxed, but I also have a strong love of composition, light and cinematic storytelling.
Petersham Nurseries gives me all of that naturally.
What Kind of Couple Would Love a Petersham Nurseries Wedding?
I think Petersham Nurseries is for people who understand that luxury doesn’t have to mean shiny.
They appreciate things that are beautifully made but perhaps slightly imperfect. They’re curious, open-minded and interested in the world around them.
They might have travelled widely and experienced different cultures. They care about food, art, nature and design, and have developed their own taste rather than simply following trends.
Perhaps they’d rather spend money on an extraordinary meal, something handmade or an experience they’ll remember than on something designed to impress.
They appreciate organic materials, old objects, flowers and furniture that don’t necessarily match.
And they care about where things come from and the impact their choices have on the world around them.
That feels very Petersham to me.
A Personal Wedding Ceremony at Petersham Nurseries
Petersham Nurseries Richmond isn’t licensed for legal marriage ceremonies, but that certainly doesn’t prevent you from having your wedding ceremony here.
The legal formalities can be completed separately, leaving you free to create a personal celebrant-led ceremony as part of your wedding celebration.
I particularly encourage my LGBTQ+ couples to explore celebrant-led ceremonies for the freedom they offer.
Your ceremony can reflect you, your relationship, your words, your music, your traditions and the people who matter to you, rather than somebody else’s idea of what a wedding is supposed to be.
I love that freedom.
And a heartfelt ceremony surrounded by plants and flowers, followed by champagne and a candlelit celebration inside the greenhouses, feels completely at home here.
Food, Nature and a Different Kind of Luxury
You can’t really talk about Petersham Nurseries without talking about food.
I’m Italian. For me, food isn’t decoration.
It’s connection.
It’s people sitting around a table, sharing something beautiful and talking for much longer than they intended.
Petersham Nurseries’ approach to food is rooted in seasonality, responsible sourcing and its connection with nature. Its Richmond restaurant has also been recognised with a Michelin Green Star for its commitment to sustainable gastronomy.
And that philosophy extends beyond the plate.
Nature isn’t something brought in at the last minute to make an event look pretty.
Nature is the environment.
That’s a very different kind of luxury from a perfectly polished London hotel ballroom.
Old ironwork. Handmade objects. Organic shapes. Mismatched furniture. Exceptional food. Flowers that actually belong in their surroundings.
There is an Italian soul, an English garden and influences from much further afield.
For me, Petersham Nurseries redefines elegance by removing any pretension.
Why I Would Love to Photograph a Petersham Nurseries Wedding
I dislike predictability.
It’s one of the reasons I’ve always been attracted to alternative weddings and unusual London wedding venues.
I want to photograph what actually happens: the connections, conversations, movement, laughter and unexpected moments that make one wedding completely different from another.
And visually, Petersham Nurseries offers me an extraordinary canvas for that.
Soft greenhouse light. Foliage. Reflections. Terracotta. Flowers. Candlelit tables. Beautiful food. Guests moving through all those layers.
I wouldn’t want to impose a wedding-photography formula on this place.
I’d want Petersham Nurseries, the couple and their people to come together naturally and photograph the story I find in front of me.
That’s where my relaxed documentary approach and my more creative, cinematic eye can meet.
